God of War Ragnarok is a long and meaty game, and depending on how much you’re engaging with its side content, even the main story can take you well upwards of 30 hours to wrap up. Even after you’re rolled the credits though, there’s still a ton of stuff to do. Ragnarok offers up a bevy of content for players to tackle in its post-game, and here, we’re going to talk about a few of those activities.
NOTE: There are major spoilers ahead for God of War Ragnarok and its post-game content.
MAX OUT KRATOS
Let’s start with the more general and obvious stuff. All of your equipment and Kratos’ own power level will obviously be pretty highly upgraded by the time you’ve finished the game, but of course, there will still be more progress to be made. Hitting that level cap is a clear and obvious goal for players to work towards, so get started on hitting the level cap of 9. Of course, chances are, if you’re doing most of the things that we’ll be talking about here, you’re likely going to hit that level cap organically anyway.
EXPLORE MORE
Even if you’ve explored Ragnarok’s Nine Realms extensively during the main story, chances are there’s still going to be plenty more that you haven’t yet seen. Return to the semi-open world areas of realms like Svartalfheim, Vanaheim, and Alfheim, and you’ll find plenty of puzzles, challenges, and areas that weren’t accessible earlier that you can now access thanks to all the tools in your arsenal. There’s plenty of engaging stuff to dive into in these newly accessible areas, so make sure you don’t skip it.
RUNITE WITH CHARACTERS
Going back to the Realms you’ve visited throughout the game after rolling the credits is doubly recommended, in fact, because there are plenty of new interactions with characters who appear in the main story. Sif, for instance, can be found at Freyr’s camp in Vanaheim, where she’s helping the rebuild the realm, while you can also go to Jotunheim to meet with Angrboda and Fenrir. In Midgard, you can also find Skjoldr, Atreus’ friend from Asgard. Other new interactions are also available for the likes of Hildisvini in Vanahiem, Thrud in Alfheim, and even Chaurli, the giant tortoise that Freya used to live inside.
PENDING FAVORS
If you have taken the time to tackle every single side quest you find before getting to the game’s end but are still hungry for more- well, there’s good news for you. As soon as God of War Ragnarok’s endgame opens up, the game will make plenty more new Favors available to you. Like side quests found throughout the rest of the game, these are extremely well-designed and engaging optional activities that are well worth checking out.
SVARTARLFHEIM
A special quest awaits in Svartalfheim after the end of the main story as well. Close to God of War Ragnarok’s conclusion, Brok is killed by Odin, and though there’s plenty of fallout from that event, it isn’t completely wrapped up until a post-game quest. Kratos can return to Svartalfheim, where Brok gets a proper sendoff and a funeral, and Sindri makes another appearance as well. It serves as a neat epilogue for the main story’s conclusion, especially for all the grieving Brok fans out there.
VANAHEIM
Deep into God of War Ragnarok’s main story, a massive new area opens up in Vanaheim. Once a lush valley full of civilization, it’s now a barren crater that’s crawling with monsters, tortured spirits, and remnants of the Aesir’s destruction of Vanaheim. There’s a good chance that you’ll have wrapped up a lot (or even most) of the side quests available here before finishing the game, but there are plenty of challenges in this area that are designed specifically for the post-game- so return to the crater area and get to work on clearing it out, restoring some of its former glory, and learning more about its past.
TYR
One of God of War Ragnarok’s biggest reveals close to its end is that the Tyr that’s been with you all along wasn’t Tyr at all. From the moment you rescued him from his prison, it was Odin in disguise all along. What happened to the real Tyr then? That’s question is answered in the post-game, where you can head to Niflheim and release Tyr from a newly accessible destroyed Aesir prison. After that point, Tyr can be found in a number of spots, including Freyr’s camp in Vanaheim and the Lake of Nine in Midgard.
BERSERKERS
The equivalent of God of War (2018)’s Valkyries, Ragnarok’s Berserkers are a line of gruelingly difficult optional bosses. Sure, you can try and fight them before you finish the main story, but it’s recommended to hold off until the post-game. There are ten of these boss fights, and once you’ve defeated every single one of them, you get to fight King Hrolf, who, in plain terms, is an absolute sadist and likely to be the recuring star of many of our nightmares.
GNA
King Hrolf is one of the hardest boss fights in God of War Ragnarok– but not the hardest. No, that tag is reserved for Gna, the queen of the Valkyries. She is a fleeting presence in the game’s main story, but even after Odin death, she manages to survive and escape- and still very much has Kratos and Freya in her crosshairs. Tracking her down and defeating her is the most challenging thing you’ll do in the entire game, so make sure to save it until the very, very end- but if you like a good, difficult boss fight, absolutely do not skip the Gna quest.
REMNANTS OF ASGARD
At the end of God of War, Odin is dead, and Asgard is destroyed, but some of his loyalists are still alive, and they’re scattered across the Realms. Tracking them down and dealing with the threat they post is part of a meaty post-game questline. There are ten remnants of Asgards that can be found throughout the Realms, so if you’re looking for more crunching combat against the Einherjar and want to get your hands on some valuable resources, keep an eye out for these remnants.
CRUCIBLE CHALLENGES
Kratos and Freya’s final fight with Gna takes place in Muspelheim, but the realm also serves as the setting for other post-game activities. Of course, God of War (2018) players will be very familiar with what’s on offer here- crucible challenges. This collection of combat gauntlets will put your skills to the test, and of course, progressing through it and seeing it through to completion also rewards you with some pretty sweet loot.
RAVENS
Just like its 2018 predecessor, God of War Ragnarok scatters dozens of Odin’s Ravens throughout the Nine Realms for you to find and kill. There’s 48 of them to kill, which, in turn, also unlocks six special equipment chests in Nifhleim at regular intervals. And that’s not even it- once all 48 ravens have been killed, you unlock a secret boss fight against the Raven Keeper. As boss fights go, it isn’t the kind of standout encounter that the likes of Gna and Hrolf are, but it’s still a decent new piece of content.
