Sorry, but the 360 is not a low end PC. It uses the same processor as the PS3, as IBM developed both in secret and kept them similar to cut down on development costs. Original Xbox, PC architecture. Xbone, PC architecture. Xbox 360, completely propiatary components just as they were on the PS3.

"We came along with Cell and we were double the frequency of any PC out there." Then in 2003 Microsoft comes to IBM and, much like Sony, asked them to design a chip unlike anything that was currently on the market. Naturally, IBM showed The Big M their latest and greatest tech which, at that time, was the multi-core "road map" that was used to create what would eventually become the Cell. Keep in mind, that all of this original technology was originally financed by Sony and Toshiba for use in the PS3.

Shippy maintains that Microsoft never got a look at the actual Cell processor and maintains that it was IBM's right to sell the technology to other platforms, such as the Xbox 360, but also states, "The Cell itself and the fundamental architecture that went into that -- that was all proprietary for PS3."

Here is my source I fully cite.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2009/01/16/chip-architect-speaks-about-xbox-360-and-ps3-creation

Edit: Also, the fact that you assume PS3 and 360 games are developed first on PC speaks volumes.

They are not built on PC first, they are built on devkits that are basically PS3's and 360's outfitted with development tools and libraries, so one can use them much like you would for developing games on a PC, but they are most certainly not PC's, they do a specific thing, and that is it. Look on Ebay for an Xbox 360 sidecar to see what I mean. You can turn your 360 phat into a dev unit with one of those.

I hope you're right, bud. I traditionally assume the games are built on PC architecture first and then ported to consoles. While the PS3 architecture makes that very difficult, the 360 is just a low end PC, just like the original XBOX. Standard Intel proc, sysbd, GPU and memory. The PS3 proc and sysbd were entirely custom. Can't say I bothered to look at the latest gens, but I presume the XBOX1 is just a current low end PC again. Not that I'm an XBOX fan, but the PS3 game devs were always complaining about the difficulty in authoring games for that system. And I heard Sony scaled things back for the PS4. Which implies it's more like a mid-range PC, making porting easier. Since the XBOX(s) is just a low end current PC, it doesnt even requjire a port. Just a performance tune down and peripheral interface refinement. Blah blah blah. What I mean to say is... yeah I think you're on the right track. Hehe.

This is both interesting and timely. Not this article, but the circumstances. I've been doing "GTA V PC" google searches on a nightly basis for 3 months and there are always top hits. But not for the last 3 days. I know Google hasn't changed their format because I've been doing "Fallout 4" searches even longer and still get top hits. I've long theorized that the PC version would release in June as a mean average between San Andreas' and IV's PC release dates. I dont believe that anymore, but at this point I strongly believe it will be announced at E3 next month. It's no surprise that Take Two is there. Of course they are. But this curious media stifling is frequently a prelude in these cases. This is a good sign.

As for whatever this article boasted on a more directed search, I didnt actually read it. But I'm sure it was all snazzy, just like the 15m that came before it :D

In the early days of GTA, the games were originally targeted at console. As time has gone on, they have realised that there is a market for a PC version. Initially the PC version was basically the console version upgraded with higher textures, but later games started to be built on higher level scalable game engines. Rockstar have learned to aim high and scale down. That way you build once and each port is maxed out for the target platform. GTAV is built on an scaleable game engine using high res assets and all the modern eye candy tech built in. Ports to each platform are optimised by removing more and more stuff from the master until its playable.

The 7 month gap is about the time it takes for a game to saturate a platforms market. When sales drop you continue to make money by launching on another platform and hopefully catch people twice who could not wait and bought the initial platform version.

This is ridiculous from Patcher, it's far more difficult to port a 360/PS3 game to PC.

The next-gen consoles are X86 architecture like a PC, therefore, a PC version ported to PS4 & Xbox One would be very simple.

There's nothing more certain than GTAV coming to PS4 & Xbox One this year.

You are definitely not smart or educated to degree level judging by that fact that you think educated people cannot be wrong, and you cannot spell analyst. I am educated to degree level and I say Patcher talks crap. He just does not understand the technical side. He's right when he states the obvious, but always wrong when he sticks his neck out, such as here.

GTAV has been created on a scaleable game engine using generic code and high res assets. All ports are taken from that and scaled DOWN to suit. There is no scaling up. Even the PC version is a scale down from the master version.

The delay is because the XB1 version is probably having to be scaled down more than they expected, so they are trying to find a fix to minimise the complaints. Rockstar want to release all 3 together so they can maximise the hype with one marketing push.
