Griftlands is a fantasy/science fiction turn based RPG developed by Canadian indie studio Klei Entertainment, who have previously developed acclaimed and successful titles such as Don’t Starve, Mark of the Ninja, and Invisible, Inc. Griftlands was first announced in 2017.

Development

Griftlands was announced by Klei Entertainment in June 2017 at the PC Gaming Show at E3 2017. The game was announced with a planned release date of late 2018, but there has been no update from the developers regarding this. Griftlands is only confirmed for release on PC, and versions for other computer operating systems, or for consoles such as PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch haven’t been announced. Griftlands uses a 2D hand-drawn art style for its visuals, and cartoon-style animations.

Story

Griftlands takes place in a fictional science fiction fantasy setting. Players take control of a band of mercenaries. The developers have stated that the story is not a focus in Griftlands, and though there will be scripted questlines based on specific characters, the narrative will not be central to the experience, since a majority of the experience will revolve around players making choices to make more money in a simulated economy where their choices with the dynamic, and procedurally generated non player characters have permanent and systems-driven consequences.

Gameplay

Griftlands places a focus on player choice in terms of mechanics and systems, and everything in the game, including money, loyalty, and morality is described as negotiable. The game is billed as a “pirate mercenary sandbox”. Players travel from town to town, and can use steal from NPCs, fight against them, charm them, negotiate with them, among other options that will be provided to players for interacting with the game. Griftlands features a dynamic world that will have procedurally generated Non playable characters. While the world and the factions within them are fixed and pre-designed, but the NPCs and their state are procedurally generated and driven by systems and how players interact with them.

Players are set in a simulated economy, and controlling a group of mercenaries, are free to make their fortune however they please. Non playable characters remember actions that players take, and they and the game’s factions treat and respond to the player differently in accordance, based on said actions. As such, some characters might hold grudges against the player, and the world and the NPCs inhabiting it will react to the player and their choices and actions. While NPCs in the game will be procedurally generated, the main characters party members will be fixed. Each of the written playable characters will have their own specific questlines unique to them, but these will also take place within the game’s systems with procedurally generated and dynamic NPCs.

Griftlands will also featured turn based strategy combat. Positioning of characters will be important, and characters can either be placed in the front row or the back row based on their strengths and weaknesses. Morale and personalities of NPCs will also play an important role in combat and how battles progress or are structured. According to the developers, battles in Griftlands are designed to be “short and impactful”. The developers have also stated that many battles in the game will feature unique objectives and aims, and may not revolve around killing or wiping out your enemies, but instead around subduing them, meaning many fight will be fought not to the death, but until such time one of the sides surrenders based on certain conditions. Killing non playable characters in the game will also lead to mechanical repercussions, according to the developers.
