Japan Sales: Nintendo Switch Continues Its Reign Over Hardware Charts, Tekken 7 Tops Software Charts

Tekken 7 sees dramatic decline over previous games in the series, but tops charts anyway.

The latest charts for hardware and software sales in Japan are now out, and predictably enough, the Nintendo Switch has topped them. This is in fact in spite of the system facing a severe shortage in Japan at the moment, which has restricted the units sold- still, with 23,000 units sold, it comes in ahead of the PS4 at 21,000 units, and the Nintendo 3DS, which is at 16,500 units.

On the software front, Tekken 7‘s PS4 version came in first, selling almost 59,000 units. This is bittersweet, because while the game certainly topped charts, its performance is a dramatic step down from how Tekken 6 and Tag Tournament 2 did. Hopefully it will have some legs. Otherwise, perennial performers, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continue to pull in numbers.

With some major releases coming up soon – including ARMS, Splatoon 2, Dragon Quest 11, Monster Hunter XX, and Pokken Tournament, it will be interesting to see how gaming hardware fares in Japan in the coming months.
