Marvel Discusses The Idea of a Marvel Gaming Universe

"We want to focus on the individual games first."

A Marvel Gaming Universe might end up happening- after all, Marvel has already indicated that the new, upcoming PS4 Spider-Man game will feel like it is a part of a larger, existing story- and Marvel has admitted that it is an idea it is open to. But for now, at any rate, they have also confirmed that they want to focus on their individual game initiatives first, before thinking about crossing them over.

“There was. I mean, they tacked on that Nick Fury scene at the end of Iron Man but did anyone think it would culminate in The Avengers? Or now Avengers Infinity War? That was a pipe dream,” said Bill Rosemann, Creative Director of Marvel Games, in an interview with The Telegraph. “The first intention was, let’s just make the best Iron Man movie. We’re approaching it the same way. This is going to be hard enough. Let’s just make the best Spider-Man game. Let’s do that. The rest will take care of itself. Who knows what the future holds? We just want to make sure each individual game is awesome, is great. Again we don’t want to trap people and contain people. We want to give them freedom.”

As noted before, gaming “universes” are an idea that remain mostly unexplored in gaming, with only Nintendo and Ubisoft being companies who have actually tried experimenting with the concept, if only a little. Marvel bringing the concept to video games, just like they did to movies, would be wonderful- we can only hope that this new Spider-Man game ends up heralding exactly that.
