Minecraft Tops 998,000 Players, “Not Even Close to Being Peak Time”

As if the insane popularity of Mojang's franchise wasn't obvious enough.

When you talk about the most popular PC game at even given time, Valve’s Dota 2 is often the first game cited. That may not be a case when you factor in the Minecraft community. Mojang game developer Nathan Adams posted some rather shocking statistics on Twitter regarding the overall popularity of the sandbox title.

“For the first time ever, we finally have the capability to see how many people are currently playing Minecraft right now. Holy crap.”

The number given by Adams? As it turns out, “There are currently over 998,000 people playing Minecraft right at this moment. It is not even remotely close to being peak time.” Compare that Dota 2’s peak today which is at 906,632 players.

Adams also shot down the belief that these numbers came purely from multiplayer. “Lots of people kept saying ‘people only play Minecraft in multiplayer’, well turns out almost exactly 50% of players are in SP at any moment.”

And in case anyone wants to claim it’s only popular on PC and consoles, then know that Minecraft Pocket Edition for smartphones has sold 30 million units till now.
