In October this year, it’ll be six years since the launch of the last new mainline 3D Mario title, Super Mario Odyssey, and though we did see the launch of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in 2021, fans of the franchise are beginning to wonder how long it’ll be before the next full-fledged instalment arrives, especially with The Super Mario Bros. Movie out now and excitement surrounding the franchise heating up again.
While the wait for an answer to that question continues, Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto has dropped something of a hint for when the next Mario game might be announced. When asked about the franchise’s next instalment in a recent interview with Variety, though he was reluctant to give a concrete answer, he said, “Well, all I can say is please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs,” accompanying the statement with a big smile.
That doesn’t narrow down the window for when the next Mario game might be announced by any means, but at least we know it’s on Nintendo’s mind now. Leaks have claimed that the Switch successor is in the works at Nintendo, with analysts expecting launch in 2024, so the company might be holding back the next Mario title to pair its launch with its next console.
Back in November 2021, while speaking about the next Mario game, Miyamoto said Nintendo will once again try to expand the franchise in new ways. Read more on that through here.
