New PS Vita Firmware Update Will Unlock 30% More Memory To be Used By Games

This would be very useful if the PS Vita HAD games.

Sony has announced that the PS Vita Firmware Update 3.50 will be unlocking up to 30% more memory for video games and developers to use. This basically means that less system resources are now being saved for overhead, and that games on the handheld can benefit from a larger pool of memory to work from.

For end consumers, this is meaningless- it will not hold any value until games that actually use the extra 30% RAM start showing up (which would explain why users haven’t noticed anything even though the update has been out for a while now).

Of course, that last part is what the problem is at this point- there is no future dedicated games development for the PS Vita. While it is getting some games in the coming months, they are all ports of games that have been developed and optimized for the PS3 or PS4, that are also getting a Vita version due to the sheer ease with which one can be made. This means that while this move is theoretically great, it may be ultimately meaningless. What use is extra memory for games, if there are no games to begin with?
