Nier: Automata Was Originally Going To Be Called Nier: Android

"Obviously Google's for the trademark [on Android] and we were worried about it."

The sequel to the cult hit JRPG Nier will be called Nier Automata, which is a bit of an odd name- but the original plan was to call it something far less obtuse, as the director of the game has revealed in a recent interview that he wanted to call the game Nier Android instead.

“Because it’s a story about androids, I wanted to call it Nier: Android,” Nier Automata director Yoko Taro revealed in an interview with EDGE. “Obviously Google’s for the trademark [on Android] and we were worried about it. There was no title fixed by the time E3 came, so we had to do the presentation without.”

It’s as good a reason as any to avoid the name, I suppose, but I really wish it had been called Nier Android in the end- it would have been a far better name than what we ultimately got, that’s for sure.
