It’s been a big few weeks for the Nintendo Switch. Not only was the Switch Lite revision announced, causing the company’s stock to skyrocket, we now know that a joint press conference is going to be held at the beginning of next month about the console’s potential future in China.
It was announced earlier in the year that Nintendo would partner with Chinese multimedia giant Tencent to finally bring the system to the China mainland. It seems the two are ready to hold a press conference about that August 2nd, as invites to the event, happening in Shanghai, have been sent out to multiple parties (thanks to games analyst Serkan Toto for translations). It’s possible this is when we’ll get an official date for that launch and what the roll out will look like.
The Nintendo Switch has proven to be highly successful for Nintendo, and getting a foothold in China could really blow the doors off, so to speak. But it’s hard to say. The market may be growing, but there’s still a lot of challenges in place that could frustrate progress. It’s also not the first time Nintendo has tried to crack into China, but it will be the first time they’ll do so with such a prominent Japanese partner and the market has changed significantly in a short time. It’ll be interesting to see where it all ends up, because if it’s successful, it will be a big boon for Nintendo.
