Nintendo Delays Mass Production Of NX – Report

With a delayed NX launch and hardware updates from Microsoft and Sony, what does the future hold for Nintendo?

Per upstream supply-chain sources, Nintendo appears to have pushed back mass production of the Nintendo NX console by several months, to an early 2017 timeframe.

The supply-side source claimed that the delay was to allow Nintendo to better integrate the handheld and console aspects of the NX, as well as to integrate VR functionality. While we’re yet to get our hands on any concrete details on the NX, rumours have long indicated that the NX would be a kind of console/handheld hybrid. Just how this will pan out remains to be seen.

Worryingly, though, Nintendo also decided to cut volume orders by half, now seeking only 10 million retail units for the NX’s first year. The abject failure of the Wii U, due to combination of poor branding, weak third-party support, and outdated hardware, may be one reason for Nintendo’s reduced risk appetite. However, new developments may also have had a role, with hardware refreshes from both Microsoft and Sony next year putting the NX in a tight spot. What do you think about the Nintendo NX?
