Nintendo Dominates Mainstream Conversation During E3 Week, Twitter Stats Show

Nintendo won E3 on multiple fronts.

Nintendo’s E3 showing this year was exemplary– they showed the best games, they had the best format, and they even had the most buzz around E3. A common criticism of their E3 format this year, however, was that Nintendo was preaching to the converted- that while their events were great at reaching those who were already Nintendo fans, they didn’t reach out to the mainstream audience that Nintendo so desperately needs in a way that the spectacle of traditional press events do. Well, as it turns out, those naysayers have been proven wrong as well.

Twitter statistics for E3 week reveal that Nintendo dominated all gaming and E3 related discussion over that period, with 47% of all the tweets during this period about Nintendo. So nearly half of all Twitter conversation in this period was Nintendo related, with Sony and Microsoft fighting for the other half. Sony came out on top in this contest, with 27% of the tweets, while Xbox brought up the rear with 25% of the tweets.

Between Mario Kart 8’s strong debut, Wii U’s strong sales rebound, and now a highly successful E3, we might be beginning to see the start of a minor turnaround for Nintendo’s console now. The system is almost certainly still doomed to last place, but maybe it will manage to pull through and post at least Gamecube level sales numbers after all.
