The Nintendo Switch has been an incredible success so far- so successful that it is rapidly defining a niche for itself in the market, becoming the go to complementary system for everybody. Nintendo has appealing hardware and an appealing lineup of games this time, which has worked greatly in its favor.
Speaking about the Switch, Sony’s Shawn Layden said to Time that it has been a great success- and that he views the Switch as a complementary system for the PS4, as opposed to competition. “[The Switch] has been a great success for Nintendo,” he said, adding that it is what Nintendo fans had been waiting for for quite a while now. Speaking about its effect on the PS4, he said, “When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.”
This is something I have been saying for while now– with Sony dominating the traditional console niche, and Nintendo providing an appealing alternative for everyone to buy into, the Xbox is starting to lose an identity with which it could appeal to the larger market. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft plans to remedy this problem come E3.
