The Switch has been a phenomenal worldwide success for Nintendo, and ditto the PS4 for Sony. But one market where the Switch has been thoroughly dominating the scene ever since its launch a little over two years ago is Japan.
By April end, the Switch had managed to sell 8 million units in the nation, which is figure the PS4 reached a little over a month before that with a little over five years on the market. In 2018, in fact, the Switch outsold the PS4 2:1 in Japan– it’s been well on track to overtake the Sony console’s lifetime sales in the country for a while, and now it’s officially done that.
As per the latest Famitsu numbers, as of May 12, the Switch sits at 8,125,637 units sold, while the PS4 sits at 8,077,754 units, which means the Switch has overtaken the PS4’s lifetime sales with two years on the market, as opposed to the PS4’s five years.
Sony, meanwhile, is gearing up for the launch of the PS5, which reports suggest will be launching in 2020– but not within the next 12 months.
