The Nintendo Switch continues its reign at the top of the charts worldwide. For the second month running, the Switch has topped the NPD charts, meaning it was the highest selling system in the US in April, beating out the PS4 and the Xbox One.
It was a good month for Nintendo all around, in fact- the Switch and 3DS put together ended up comprising half of all hardware sold for the month in America. “The Nintendo Switch system was the best-selling video game hardware in the month of April with more than 280,000 units sold,” Nintendo said in their press release. “This is the second month in a row that Nintendo Switch has led the pack in video game hardware sales, following a record-breaking launch in March. April sales of Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems (more than 68,000 units sold) combined to make up almost half of all hardware sales across all dedicated video game systems.”
On the software front, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, predictably, became the highest selling game for the month of April- in spite of the fact that it was on sale for only two days. The game sold 550,000 units in April, meaning all other games on the chart sold less than this amount.
This is excellent news for the Switch, for Mario Kart, and for Nintendo, who have been doing everything right with the Switch. Whether or not they can maintain this kind of momentum in the coming months is something that remains to be seen- but it can hardly be denied that they are off to a great start.
