No Man’s Sky Dev Meeting Genicap to Discuss Superformula Patent Claims

Sean Murray has extended an invitation to accusing party.

Last week was rather harrowing for Hello Games and its upcoming No Man’s Sky. Along with hardcore fans freaking out over the PC version releasing three days after the PS4 version enough to cancel pre-orders (and no, we’re not kidding), Johan Gielis of Dutch company Genicap claimed that No Man’s Sky uses his Superformula for its procedural generation.

Creator and company co-founder Sean Murray denied the claims on Twitter and also noted that, “I wish Johan Gielis, the author, all the best in future. We’re going to meet and chat maths once the game is out.”

Eurogamer asked spokesperson Jeroen Sparrow for an update and he noted that, “There have been several sources and people (Sean Murray himself, among others) who have indicated more or less directly that the Superformula has been used. Yesterday Sean Murray invited us for a cup of coffee at Hello Games in order for him to clarify things. We will certainly do that.”

For now, No Man’s Sky is on track for its release on August 9th for PS4 and August 12th for PC.
