The NPD Group’s report for January 2015 console and software sales in the United States is in and Techland’s Dying Light has emerged as the top selling title across all platforms. But that’s not all – it actually set new records for a new IP in the survival horror genre.
NPD analyst Liam Callahan stated that, “In January 2015, Dying Light had the highest first month of sales for new IP in the survival-horror genre, exceeding the previous record, The Evil Within, which launched in October 2014.”
Dying Light superseded Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Grand Theft Auto 5, in second and third place respectively for January, as the top-selling title of the month. Makes you wonder what could have been had the physical release also launched outside of North America.
Callahan also revealed that in general, sales for new titles were better than in January 2014. “The sales of January 2015 launch titles were up over 200 percent versus January 2014, with Dying Light being the major new release of the month. If January 2015 releases performed in line with January 2014 releases, overall software sales would have decreased by 4 percent.”
