NPD June 2013 Report: Nintendo 3DS Beats Xbox 360 for Second Month

Total industry sales continue to drop, totaling $593.3 million for June.

The June 2013 NPD report is in, and things are looking good for Nintendo even as video game retail sees a continued decline. The handheld sold 225,000 units in June, according to a spokesperson who spoke to GamesIndustry International, and it is currently seeing its sales increased by 40 percent year-over-year.

NPD analyst Liam Callahan stated that, “To quote Nintendo during E3, ‘software sells hardware’, which is evident in this month’s 3DS results. Strong double-digit increases in the 3DS hardware sales were coupled with triple-digit digit increases in software for June sales.

“3DS software sales momentum is building due to a steady flow of content over the past few months, leading to positive year-to-date sales results. Animal Crossing: New Leaf also sold well in the context of first-party games for the 3DS, having the third highest first-month sales next to two launches from holiday 2011: Mario Kart 7, and Super Mario 3D Land.”

Total sales in the industry saw a 15 percent drop however. Total software sales equaling $313.8 million and total hardware sales at $142 million with 14 percent and 30 percent drops respectively.
