Paper Mario: The Origami King’s Exploration and Cheeky Humor Showcased in New Gameplay

A boss battle also headlines this near-35 minute gameplay video.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is Nintendo’s next big exclusive for the Nintendo Switch and it’s out soon. So to give players better idea of what to expect, the company showcased more than 30 minutes of gameplay during its recent Treehouse Live. Slight spoilers for the beginning of the game and a boss fight follow so be warned.

Though the turn-based combat and RPG elements are somewhat light, Paper Mario: The Origami King still features the series’ signature humor. You’ll interact with Koopa Troopas as they lament their main attack being the ability to walk slowly forward. At one point, you can even haggle with Monty Mole over a Shell Stone.

Footage of a boss fight is also showcased against The Colored Pencils, a member of the Legion of Stationery. While regular battles involve rotating rings to line up enemies, the boss battles are more about creating a path for Mario to travel and attack. Better keep plenty of coins handy, especially since they help extend the timer during turns.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is out on July 17th for the Switch. The embargo date for reviews is unknown, aside from Famitsu which recently awarded it 36/40. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.
