The Persona fanbase has been crying out for the series (and Persona 5 in particular) to drop its long-standing PlayStation exclusivity and become available on more platforms for quite some time, but while its upcoming launch for Xbox as well as Steam and Switch is far more exciting from that perspective, the RPG is, of course, also coming to PS5.
Persona 5 Royal is obviously already playable on PS5, with the PS4 version being available on the console via backward compatibility. When the native PS5 version launches later this year though, it seems it won’t offer any upgrade path whatsoever to those who already own the game on the PS4.
In an FAQ published on the official Persona website, Atlus recently confirmed that Persona 5 Royal won’t support PS4 to PS5 upgrades, free or otherwise. If you have the game on PS4 and want the native PS5 version, you can’t get it for free or even for a slashed price, and will instead have to buy it at full price all over again.
As you can imagine, that hasn’t gone down particularly well with a great deal of people. Essentially asking people to double dip when upgrade paths – whether free or paid – have become something of a standard isn’t something that you’d expect people to react well to. It should be interesting to see how Atlus responds.
Persona 5 Royal is launch for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 28. It will also be available via Game Pass.
