Persona 5 is quite possibly the greatest JRPG ever, and one of the best games of this year- and Famitsu magazine (via DualShockers) in Japan certainly seems to think so. In a poll held for its readers, Persona 5 emerged as the greatest game of all time at #1 position.
That is not something I can take much issue with- after all, Persona 5 is JRPGs at their peak form, featuring sublime and tuned gameplay, great characters and plot, and a superlative soundtrack backed with an overwhelming sense of style. Other games on the list include NieR Automata and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild– both of which make it into the top five, actually.
There are definitely issues with the list in that there is a lot of recency bias, and a lot of it is influenced by Japan’s unique tastes- but on the whole, I think it’s a good bunch of games they selected, even if you maybe disagree with some of their rankings. Check out the top 40 below.
