Sega’s Phantasy Star Online 2 will be headed to the PlayStation 4, Sega confirmed today. The game originally launched in 2012-13 on the PC and PlayStation Vita across Japan and Asian territories. The game has as of right now not been confirmed for a western release on any platform, so don’t get too excited.
Technically, it is entirely possible for a western gamer to play and enjoy Phantasy Star Online 2, since the South East Asian version has support for English (and the translation is actually pretty well done too), but an IP block, as well as a disparity in updates, makes it a less than optimal experience.
Sega has pledged to be better about releasing its games in the west though, so maybe we will see this one here sooner rather than later- that, and the fact that Japanese publishers usually launch PS4 versions of their games to prep them for a western release makes things encouraging.
But until then, all we can do is hope.
