As per usual, The Games Awards was filled with all kinds of reveals ranging from both the expected, the surprising, as well as the disappointing. But one teaser was about as mysterious as you could possibly get: the brief tease for Prologue from PUBG studio PlayerUnknown. The trailer, if you can call it that, was literally nothing more than a first person view looking around a forest area for a few seconds. So, what is it? Well, they aren’t quite ready to tell us, but we can know what it isn’t.
Talking with Forbes, Brendan Greene revealed that despite speculation the teaser was the beginning of some viral marketing for a PUBG 2, that isn’t the case. The game will not even be a shooter at all. Greene says it’s a project they want to tackle that has wide-spreading appeal and something with a global impact.
“This is the first step in the journey for me,” he said. “We set up the studio, and founded it with the goal of experimenting with new technology. Now we’re taking that first step towards building new technologies, and Prologue is the first step into the new world for us. I wanted the chance to deliver something new on a global scale.”
What any of that means for the project probably won’t become apparent until we finally find out what this thing will be. PUBG became a worldwide phenomena and helped to spawn the battle royale genre that’s found its way into many mainstream shooters by now. It’ll be interesting to see what the company comes up with next.
