PlayStation 4 Crosses 100 Million Units Shipped Worldwide

Sony reports 3.2 million units shipped in Q1 of the 2019 fiscal year.

In its Q1 fiscal year 2019 results, encompassing the period from April 1st to June 31st of 2019, Sony revealed that 3.2 million PlayStation 4 units had been shipped worldwide. Lifetime shipments till date for the console are now at a staggering 100 million units worldwide. Though the number of units shipped in this quarter is the same as Q1 FY2018, the lifetime total is still staggering.

Gaming revenue for the quarter was at 457.5 billion yen or $4.16 billion, down by 3.1 percent year-on-year compared to the previous quarter. Gaming operating profit stands at 73.8 billion yen or $0.672 billion, which is down by 11.6 percent over the same period last year. This makes Q1 FY2019 the second most successful for the PlayStation brand in terms of revenue and operating profit.

Sony still has quite a ways to go with the PlayStation 4 before it officially launches the PlayStation 5. Death Stranding, which is exclusive to the console, is out in November. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part 2 is also rumoured to be releasing in February 2020. Could the PS4 go even further in terms of sales as a result? We’ll find out in the coming months.
