A report last week discussed the upcoming PlayStation 5, apparently we’ll into development, also noting that the console was further along in development than might be expected. The report speculated that the console might launch in 2019, or even as early as later this year, which would be rather shocking—but it was only speculation, and it made it clear to note it as such.
Of course, a lot of people decided to run with the idea that the PS5 was coming this year (meanwhile, I wrote an article stating that while it was not unlikely, it was almost certainly not going to happen). However, now, thanks to a report by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, it appears as though the 2018 release date was a pipe dream more than anything.
Schreier interviewed multiple developers and publishers in the industry, third party as well as Sony’s own in house partners, and it sounds as though while work on the PS5 has begun, the console is decidedly not due out this year, or maybe even next year—it sounds like it is more primed for a 2020 release right now (though his sources were all quick to note that with a project this size, dates change all the time).
Which means PS4 and PS4 Pro owners don’t have to worry about upgrading their consoles just yet—for now, Sony will stick with the PS4 family.
