While Nintendo has always focused on mechanical prowess and simply making its games, and the act of playing them, fun, Sony has focused on gaming as a medium of storytelling, trying to expand what games can do, and the kinds of reactions they can elicit from their audiences via their stories and characters.
And, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan and Asia President Atsushi Morita, this is something that PlayStation players should continue expecting going forward. Speaking at the PlayStation Awards ceremony, Morita promised players more games that will “bring them joy” and “touch their souls”.
“Entertainment has evolved over the years: it started in the world of text, then we had cartoons with pictures, which then adopted movement and turned into anime and films, and they have become interactive,” he said (via DualShockers). “Games continue to evolve absorbing the best or the best of all types of entertainment along with the advancement of technology. Today they are the most cutting-edge format of entertainment.
“They offer absolute fun, they have the power to move our hearts, and we want to convey the wonder of games to more people, and establish games as something that connects people, something that people can enjoy even casually. We would like to raise games to an ever-higher dimension.”
I can believe Sony will continue trying to put games of that nature out- they have managed that multiple times, with titles like The Last of Us and Shadow of the Colossus. I can’t wait to see where they go next in their quest to elevate gaming further.
