PlayStation VR Sales Hit 1 Million Sold Worldwide

5.25 million units of software sold.

The PlayStation VR is the most successful high end mainstream VR headset worldwide, and it has just crossed an important sales milestone- it has now sold 1 million units worldwide, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden confirmed to The Verge. It has also sold 5.25 million units of VR games worldwide, which is a great attach ratio- but it is unclear whether this refers to VR specific games, or if it also includes games with VR modes present.

It’s a good number, but it has missed Sony’s original projections- the company expected a million units in sales in the first six months, and we’re now over that time frame by almost two months. Speaking about the lower than expected sales, Layden said that the system has been supply constrained, and things should get better now.

“We’ll have freer supply in the marketplace. We got to a point around Christmas where you would be hard-pressed to find VR anywhere. So we dialed back some of our promotional activity at that time because we didn’t want to be promoting a platform for people to find out they couldn’t get it. I didn’t want to create more unhappy customers.”

Hopefully, that is the case- if VR is to take off, the PlayStation VR is the best bet there is. We’ll know at E3 what plans Sony has for its future.
