We still don’t know exactly when Sony plans on launching the PlayStation VR, their bid for the increasingly crowded VR market, which uses a PS4 powered VR headset. We actually have no idea about anything related to the launch- the price, the launch territories, or the release date, although we have seen a fair bit of rumors circulating. But for that last one at least, we got something in the way of concrete information today, when GameStop’s CEO said in an earnings call that Sony’s PlayStation VR will launch this Fall.
GameStop obviously is privy to Sony’s plans- and as the largest dedicated retailer for video game software, hardware, and accessories, their word obviously has far more credibility attached to it than the average Reddit rumor. Moreover, a Fall release date also makes sense for Sony, since the company has often stated that they plan on treating the PlayStation VR as a brand new system (and brand new systems often launch in Fall, when they are primed to tap into the holiday shopping frenzy).
Whether or not this is true remains to be seen, of course, and plans can and have been known to change at the last moment. But for now, it seems very likely that the PlayStation VR will launch around October or November of this year.
