On the heels of the smartphone release of the Nintendo 3DS free to play game Pokemon Shuffle, The Pokemon Company announced today a brand new Pokemon experience coming to iOS and Android devices next year- it’s called Pokemon Go, and it’s an augmented reality experience that will have players trying to find Pokemon in the real world around them.
The new game is being developed by Niantic in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company; in addition, Nintendo is also developing a Pokemon themed smartwatch to go along with the app, that will notify you in the background if there are any Pokemon in your real world vicinity, so you can pull out your phone to capture them, if necessary.
It’s actually a very cool idea, and a great way to expand the brand to smartphones without infringing upon the mainline games on Nintendo handhelds. It also sounds like something that is bound to be a hit with kids.
