Pokemon on Switch Will be a New Generation, According to Official Nintendo Magazine

With, apparently, substantially rethought mechanics as well.

Pokemon on Nintendo Switch will mark the very first console entry in the long running franchise in over a 20 year long history. It’s already going to be massive on the basis of that alone, and there’s substantial hype for it on the basis of just that knowledge.

However, amidst this hype, there have been a lot of things about the game that have been unknown—for example, is the new Pokemon game on Switch going to be a brand new generation? Or will it, for example, be a remake? It is important to note that in their announcement of the game last year, The Pokemon Company referred to it as a “new core Pokemon RPG for the Nintendo Switch,” fastidiously avoiding any mention of it being a new generation.

However, now, at last, we may have some clarity on what exactly the new game is supposed to be—at least if the Official Nintendo Magazine is supposed to be believed. According to the magazine, screens of which were posted on Twitter, The Pokemon Company’s new game will be the eighth generation of Pokemon, and will include some rethought mechanics in an attempt to “surprise the player”, presumably not unlike how Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey represented a soft reboot of sorts for their respective franchises.

The magazine doesn’t go into any more detail than just that—and in spite of the “official” in its name, it is important to remember that this is not an official confirmation from Nintendo, Game Freak, or The Pokemon Company. But if it is true, then the new Pokemon game may end up being the most exciting instalment we have had in the series in a very long time.
