Pokemon Sword and Shield Offers Switch Online Purchase In-Game

Nintendo clarifies the in-game purchase option for those who don't have Switch Online.

Recently, the official website for Pokemon Sword and Shield stated that there would be an “in-game purchase” option for those who didn’t have Nintendo Switch Online. Since a subscription is required for accessing the game’s multiplayer features, we took this as a sign that Nintendo was offering a stripped down version of online access. As it turns, this isn’t the case.

Speaking to TechRadar, a Nintendo of America spokesperson said, “As stated on the Game Store pages for the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games at www.nintendo.com, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the games’ online features. The games include an in-game option to purchase a Nintendo Switch Online membership for those who do not already have one.”

So what you’ll actually be getting in-game isn’t just multiplayer access but the ability to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Currently, you can purchase a Switch Online subscription for $3.99 per month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for one year. The service also offers cloud save backup and free NES and SNES titles.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is out on November 15th for Nintendo Switch. Head here for more information on new Pokemon in the Galar region. You could also check out some more Gigantamax Pokemon here.
