Sony’s handheld, the PS Vita, never had much of a life, as it had its footing swept out from under it by the onslaught of smartphones and tablets- what little of the traditional handheld gaming market was left was swooped on by Nintendo’s 3DS. The poor Vita never had much of a chance to live- except for in Japan where, over the last four years, it’s managed to carve out a healthy niche for itself, and become a vibrant ecosystem for third party publishers in the nation.
Over in Japan, then, is where the Vita has just had what might be its first significant sales related milestone in a very long time- Vita sales in Japan are now at 5 million units LTD. This is more than consoles such as the Wii U, Gamecube, the PS4, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One have sold- so it’s done pretty well for itself.
Of course, it’s trailing dramatically behind Nintendo’s 3DS, which has sold over 20 million units in Japan- so over four times as many. It’s also a major step down from the PSP, which also sold nearly 20 million in the country. Still, I guess it’s a small victory- those don’t come often for the Vita, so let’s celebrate what we get here.
