The latest Media Create weekly charts for video game hardware and software sales in Japan are out, and this is the most competitive week for sales in Japan that we have seen for a while. Nintendo Switch sales were (barely) eked out by the PS4 and PS4 Pro cumulatively, with the PS4 family selling about 600 more units than the Switch did. Of course, Switch supply has dried up in Japan again, presumably in anticipation of the upcoming launch of Super Mario Odyssey next week, which might have something to do with that.
PS4’s domination was far more convincing on the software front, on the other hand- five of the top ten games and nine of the top 20 were PS4 games (with seven out of the top ten games being either PS4 or PS Vita titles). Gran Turismo Sport led the software charts, with 150,000 units sold. City Shrouded in Shadow, The Evil Within 2, the PS4 version of Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy, and the PS Vita game Uta no Prince-sama: Amazing Aria & Sweet Serenade Love rounded out the top five respectively. Meanwhile, Switch software, such as Splatoon 2, Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, and Pokken, continued to show strong legs.
Next week’s charts will be especially interesting- that’s when Mario Odyssey launches at long last. I can’t wait to see how things turn out…
