The Japanese home console market may no longer be the massive, driving force that it once was, but it looks like with persistence, some systems can still have a shot at selling well there. The Nintendo 3DS, for instance, managed to sell over 20 million units there, and the Wii U is now at 3.2 million units sold.
The PlayStation 4 is the latest system to hit 3 million units in Japan, as its sales performance last week, as reported by Media Create (via NeoGAF) pushed it over the edge. 3 million isn’t a whole lot in the larger picture – it forms less than 10% of the PS4’s worldwide install base, and the console still hasn’t even overtaken the Wii U there – but the console is just two and a half years old there, and its biggest games for the Japanese market, such as Final Fantasy 15 and Persona 5, are yet to release.
So the PS4 has a solid base to work from, and a potentially bright future, too. Let’s just hope the console continues to do well there, and that the Japanese home console market can rebound.
