Yeah tell your brother not to worry. The PS4 Pro is more than Double the power over the regular console and for only $399. Even if some games won't be full 4k@60fps the hardware can handle 1440p @ 60fps without issue. That power won't go to waste.

If even the most fickle of reviewers at DigitalFoundry could be impressed, I have confidence people will see the benefits too.

Sony will surely use this as a test to see if the gaming market will allow for console upgrades every 2-3 years or not. It's a different market than smartphones, where the people have a different mindset. I do believe more people are wanting more power now, sooner than before. But on video game forums there are more people saying they intend to skip Pro and keep their PS4 and just wait for PS5 (if there is one, or whatever comes next). If sales meet their expectations or are ballpark at least, I think Sony may continue this shortening of life cycles for PlayStation consoles. Otherwise this could end up being a one time phenomenon.

I hope you're right and the benefit will still be quite apparent to those without the HDR. My tv is a Samsung KS9810 so it has HDR, but my bro's tv is a bit older; it's 4K without HDR. He's getting the Pro too and I hope he won't complain too much (he tends to whine a lot) if he's not satisfied compared to how it'll look on my tv. I ask him not to compare but I know that's not gonna happen, lol

If you have a cheap TV sure you're going to benefit from the XBone S' upscaler. Most AV enthusiast don't buy cheap panels. Even the Forbes writer states: "What’s more, the remarkable quality of the Xbox One S’s 4K game upscaling stands out extremely clearly even against the excellent upscaling built into a very high-end 4K TV like Samsung’s UN65JS9500." Yup he says EVEN. So no benefit involved from getting an XBone S over a PS4. You also have to take into account the smoother frame rates PS4 delivers on games compared to the XBone S. At the end of the day the PS4 still has faster hardware than the XBone S.

Given the price of the XBone S is $349 for a 1TB system, you would also be insane to consider that over the PS4 Pro 1TB at $399.
PS4 Pro will have increased visuals and frame rates for all games that you will get to enjoy NOW, not a year from now.

The Pro will deliver on many levels. Even if you have a 4k set without HDR you will at least get increased resolution and frame rates over a regular PS4 game. There's really no cons in getting a PS4 Pro especially at $399!!

As for time between releases I think you better get used to it because both Micro$oft and Sony wants its customers to have upgrades available to them every 3 years. Sure it's long than cell phones but at least it'll be cheapers. Since games will be backward and forward compatible there's really no pressure to upgrade either.

You make a good point about not many people owning 4K sets yet, let alone HDR capable ones. I wonder, how much will people be missing out on who bought a 4K set without the HDR? Would using Pro on a 4K tv without HDR, be an inferior experience compared to someone who has a 4K HDR tv? Probably a lot of people bummed out right now at the prospect of this.

I hope that whatever is next after Pro, be it PS5 or some other name - the better not release it prior to 2019. They need to give people more time between buying new consoles. Like maybe the 6-8 year single console generation may be over, but I want at least 4 years between generations or I will just go PC all the way.

ur welcome to meet me at my local best buy and we can hook it up to some of the tv's to prove it.

u know what, go buy a One S, and then bring it to best buy and then hook it up to multiple 4K tv's, first let the tv's scaler do the work, then let the One S do the work...

Here's a little quote from Xbox Hating Site Forbes:

The Xbox One S, though, tramples unceremoniously all over these arguments by delivering quite simply one of the finest upscaling performances I’ve seen.

My years of experience in the AV world have taught me that getting good quality source equipment to upscale resolution rather than leaving it to a screen often yields superior results. But even knowing this didn’t prepare me for just how much cleaner, sharper and less noisy games look on a 4K TV via the Xbox One S than they do via the original Xbox One.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2016/08/31/6-reasons-the-xbox-one-s-is-more-important-than-even-microsoft-seems-to-think-it-is/#22af1e9e480a

Sony can only get what AMD has in its product line. Scorpio is a year away because they Micro$oft is relying on AMD's new Zen APU to be released in 2017.

At this point Sony is being realistic knowing that hardly anyone has 4K panels right now. Those that bought 4K early are pissed since they likely don't have HDR in it. My money is on Sony releasing PS5 in 2018-19 with 4K@60fps in mind.

I didn't say that Pro would be 5.5TF for certain, but I thought that Sony would opt for the higher power... I'm really disappointed that they went with the 4.2TF specs in the end, but I'm sure it was simply to keep costs down. People would have whined like babies if the price would have been steep. Oh well, looks like Sony will lose the power lead when Scorpio releases. Still, at least they have their stellar exclusives and yup releasing sooner is a good thing in my book. I'll get the Pro though and Scorpio when they're both released.

It will be happening as backwards and forwards compatibility is more or less secured by going with an x86 platform. These frequent upgrades aren't forced and if you for example skipped out on the PS4 Pro upgrade then you could still upgrade your current PS4 game library when you jump onto PS5 or PS6.
