The PS4 Pro is not powerful enough to deliver native 4K games (though it should manage to upscale games to that resolution very convincingly)- that said, it can still have mass market appeal by leveraging media capabilities to appeal to an audience beyond just video games. Sony know this, because they have utilized this strategy to devastating affect with the PlayStation and audio CDs, PlayStation 2 and DVDs, and PlayStation 3 and Blu Ray discs.
So with the PS4 Pro and Sony’s push for 4K, you would think that the least it can do is play 4K Blu Ray discs, right? That would mean that it can appeal to regular shoppers this Holiday season, who might be picking up cheap 4KTVs, and want some content for them.
As it turns out, the answer is no– the PS4 Pro cannot play 4K Blu Ray discs. If you want 4K video output on the console, streaming videos is really your only option. Which makes you wonder what the point of this system really even is. Even the Xbox One S can play UHD Blu Rays!
