PS4 Pro’s Lack of 4K Blu-Ray Drive Addressed by Sony’s Jim Ryan

Price is only one factor of several.

Positives and negatives aside regarding the PlayStation 4 Pro’s spec sheet, one disappointment that many found common ground with is in the lack of a 4K Blu-ray drive to play ultra HD media. As it turns out, this was done not only with price and functionality (along with encouraging streaming, especially with that fancy Netflix association in the background), but to also position the PS4 Pro as a gaming device.

PlayStation global head of marketing and sales Jim Ryan told The Telegraph that price was only “one of a number of factors. As we’ve said ad nauseum, this is positioned primarily as a gaming device.

“Every design decision is taken with the gamer in mind in terms of specifications, functionality, price and various features. All of those things combine with our view that we want to future proof ourselves and increasingly the trend of consuming video content is from streaming services.”

Is that good enough for you? What if Project Scorpio counters this by including a 4K Blu-ray drive (since native 4K resolutions have already been confirmed)? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
