One day after reports surfaced that Sony’s PS4 had beat out the Microsoft Xbox One in sales yet again, the company had even more good news. NPD just released its sales report and said the PS4 has now officially topped the nine million total units sold mark thanks in large part to another strong September. The running tally is certainly the high water mark since the PS4 has been consistently beating the Xbox One since the two consoles were released, the report wasn’t all good news.
The NPD report says that the hardware sales last month were actually quite depressed when compared to last year. Hardware Sales were down more than 27 percent from the same period from 2014. Of course, those lower sales numbers are also down for the entire year. NPD believes the lower numbers can be blamed on the release of Destiny last year. That game was one that was moving quite a bit of hardware when it launched last year. So far this year, there just hasn’t been any kind of game to his the PS4 that has moved hardware as well.
While there are less PS4s selling for Sony, the company is seeing almost exactly the same kind of software sales as they saw this time of year in 2014. In total, software sales are only down three percent, which shows that games are still quite popular, even though they aren’t helping to sell as many consoles.
