PS4K Features 24% More Memory Bandwidth, Better CPU And Twice The GPU Power

So the question now is, what will be more powerful? The PS4K or the Nintendo NX?

The mists are clearing and we are getting a better idea of just what to expect from Sony’s now all but confirmed mid generation upgrade for the PS4, the PS4.5 or the PS4K. According to a new GiantBomb report, the console is internally called the PlayStation NEO- not only that, but GiantBomb also have their hands on the specifications for the system.

On the whole, it doesn’t seem to be as powerful as was previously rumored- rather than being a PS4.5, it seems to be more of a PS4.25. According to Eurogamer’s interpretation of GiantBomb’s specs, the PS4K will have 24% more memory bandwidth over the base console, and twice the GPU power. It also has an improved CPU over the original, though since Sony are choosing to stick with the Jaguar design, there’s not much that can be done there.

The specs of the new console are:

  • 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz for the PS4K, versus 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz for the base PS4
  • Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz for the PS4K, versus AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz for the base PS4
  • 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s for the PS4K, versus 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s for the base PS4

So yeah, there you have it- it’s leaked now.

The question now is, naturally, which console will be more powerful? Will the PS4 manage to keep the crown of being the world’s most powerful console thanks to the PS4K? Or will Nintendo usurp it with their upcoming Nintendo NX? We don’t know yet, but both companies are due to make official announcements of these new machines some time soon- possibly at E3. So we’ll have the answers soon enough.
