PS5 Receives Variable Refresh Rate Support This Week

Astro's Playroom, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village and other titles will receive support in the coming weeks via patches.

Almost one and a half years after the PlayStation 5 launched worldwide, it’s finally set to receive Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support this week. The update will go live worldwide and allows for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible displays and TVs to dynamically sync their refresh rate with the console’s output frame rate. Not only does this reduce input lag (depending on the game), but it also results in smoother looking visuals while eliminating frame pacing and screen tearing.

Upon receiving the update, VRR will be enabled automatically for supported titles (assuming you have an HDMI 2.1 TV that’s compatible with the feature). VRR can be used for unsupported titles as well though it may have unexpected results. Simply navigate to the Screen and Video section in the Settings, then Video Output and turn VRR off if that happens.

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony confirmed that previous PS5 titles can be optimized for VRR through patches while forthcoming titles could launch with support for the same. In the meantime, it provided a list of PS5 games that will receive patches to support VRR in the coming weeks. Check them out below:
