When the PS5 launched in November of 2020, it didn’t feature support for Variable Refresh Rate (or VRR), which, understandable, was met with some dissatisfaction from many. At the time, Sony had said that VRR would release for PS5 in future update, though updates on that front had almost completely dried up in recent months. Now, it looks like there’s some light at the end of the tunnel.
In a recently published PlayStation Blog post, Sony’s senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino has confirmed that VRR will finally be releasing for the PS5 “in the coming months”- though there’s no word on exactly when that’ll be. This will enhance the visual performance of games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, addressing screen tearing and frame pacing issues, and more.
Nishino says that all previously released PS5 games can be updated with patches to support VRR, while other can support it at launch. Meanwhile, VRR can also be applied to games that don’t support it- with some caveats.
“As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it.,” Nishino writes. “This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.”
Sony will “share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch” as we approach the release of VRR on PS5, whenever that is. Stay tuned.
