PS5 With Detachable Disc Drive “Works Flawlessly,” Official Details Coming “Soon” – Rumor

Following his original report, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson spoke to individuals who said the console's test kit is "in people's hands."

Back in September, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported that a PlayStation 5 console with detachable disc drive is in the works. In a follow-up tweet, two individuals revealed that the test kit is “in people’s hands.” Furthermore, it “works flawlessly” and “We should hear more about it officially soon.”

Internally known as D chassis PlayStation 5 (since it’s replacing the A, B, and C chassis currently used for production), this version will have similar hardware to existing models. The only difference is the detachable disc drive, which can be connected through a USB-C port on the back of the console. Along with selling the new PS5 separately, it will have a bundle that includes the disc drive.

Consumers can also reportedly purchase the disc drive separately. If an official announcement is “soon,” we could hear more at the Consumer Electronics Show. It takes place from January 5th to 8th, 2023. Sony is a featured exhibitor, so it’s possible. As always, stay tuned for further updates in the coming weeks.
