Redbox No Longer Carrying Game Rentals

Another rental option gone.

There’s not a lot of options out there for renting video games. With the death of rental brick and mortar stores such as Blockbuster, and the lack of digital rental options similar to films such as Amazon Prime or iTunes, there’s just not many ways for someone to try out a game before buying anymore. And, unfortunately, it seems there’s about to be one less out there.

Redbox announced that after this year, they will no longer carry game rentals in any machines, in any regions where the service is located. You’ll still be available to purchase the remaining stock of titles, but once they’re gone, Redbox is out of the video game business.

Redbox allowed you to rent a lot of the newest games for just a few dollars a night. While it often wasn’t enough time to finish a title, it was a great way to try out something before deciding to buy it or not. Now the only really remaining way to rent video games on a big scale is Gamefly, the mail order service. There’s also services like Game Pass, which can serve a lot of the same purpose. But as far as Redbox, it’s no longer an option for players.
