Sony and Bandai Namco have announced that they have signed a strategic business alliance agreement. As part of this agreement, the former is acquiring 16 million shares of the latter which is valued at around ¥68 billion, making Sony Group approximately a 2.5 percent stakeholder in Bandai Namco Holdings.
In the press release announcing the partnership, the core of the agreement is to strengthen engagement among fans of Japanese media like anime and manga. A big part of this will revolve around growing the audience for anime, which is described as a field that is ripe for rapid market growth.
As one would expect from both Sony and Bandai Namco, the partnership will likely lead to broader adaptations of various anime and manga IPs, including potentially more games that would be developed and released on PlayStation systems. While no specific title or IP was mentioned in the press release, Bandai Namco has a history of developing and publishing several games based on various anime and manga, especially from those published in Shueisha’s Jump line of magazines.
“The Bandai Namco Group promotes an ‘IP axis strategy’ that aims to maximize IP value by leveraging the appeal and worldview of IP, providing the optimal products and services at the optimal timing in the optimal regions,” said Bandai Namco Holdings executive vice president Nobuhiko Momoi. “We are filled with excitement about the potential to create new entertainment by combining Sony Group’s strengths and technological capabilities across various entertainment fields with Bandai Namco’s IP axis strategy”
Momoi also spoke about how this agreement will ultimately lead Bandai Namco to its long-term vision of connecting with the fans. “Through this collaboration, we aim to connect with IP fans worldwide, co-create the future together, and realize our purpose, ‘Fun for All into the Future,’ and mid- to long-term vision, ‘Connect with Fans,’” he said.
Sony has also confirmed in the press release that, while this agreement is a big step forward for the company when it comes to expanding its offering across various forms of media through different IPs, there won’t be a “material impact” on the company’s financial results for the fiscal year.
Sony Group Corporation’s chief strategy officer and representative corporate executive officer Toshimoto Mitomo said in the press release that, through this partnership, both Sony and Bandai Namco group will be able to expand their capacity for “multidirectional expansion” of the latter’s IP.
“By combining the strengths of both companies in the field of entertainment and unlocking the potential of compelling IP, we will further accelerate our efforts to maximize IP value and realize Sony’s long-term vision,’“Creative Entertainment Vision’,” said Mitomo.
It is worth noting that, considering Sony’s number of businesses, this agreement is likely going to result in a host of different outings when it comes to adaptations of anime and manga. We will also likely end up seeing more games based on these be released, which would traditionally be developed and published by Bandai Namco itself.
