Sony has announced at this year’s GDC that it has partnered with middleware vendors GameMaker: Studio and MonoGame to work on and release native middleware solutions and tools for the PS4.
Fully integrated solutions for Unity have also been made available for the PS3 and PS Vita, and will be available for the PS4 starting April of this year.
Sony, of course, is pretty excited about these deals. “Unity, GameMaker:Studio and MonoGame represent the most popular game development tools leveraged by universities and independent developers alike,” Sony wrote on its PlayStation blog, “and are used for both prototyping and full-scale game development.”
GameMaker: Studio has been jointly developed by Sony and YoYo Games, and has been used in titles such as Risk of Rain and Home, while MonoGames was used in TowerFall Ascension.
Sony has also announced the “powerful game development tool” Authoring Tools Framework as a free, open source download from the GitHub site. This was used in games as large as The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls.
