Yesterday, we reported that the eagerly anticipated PlayStation VR is apparently slated for launch this Fall, according to the CEO of GameStop, the largest dedicated retailer of video game hardware, software, and accessories in North America. However, just a day later, Sony have responded to this assertion with a statement that categorically denies any such launch date.
“GameStop was speculating, and we have not released any further details on launch timing,” a Sony representative said via email to Game Informer.
As of right now, then, we still have no indication of a launch date for the PlayStation VR, beyond the fact that Sony does intend to launch it some time this year. A Fall release date does make sense (and also aligns with Sony’s launch strategies for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 3 Slim, PlayStation Move, and PlayStation 4), but at the same time, Sony may feel that launching the product – which they have admitted they do not see as being mass market, at least not right at first – would give them a better strategic advantage (especially since Oculus Rift and HTC Vive would both have been on the market long before Fall).
We’ll keep you posted.
