Sony First Party Development Will Be “Improved and Increased” – SIE CEO

John Kodera talks about "successful and powerful IPs" being made into franchises.

In its recent Investor Day meeting in Tokyo, Sony Corporation held a Q&A session with Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John Kodera talking more about bolstering the console’s first party line-up.

Along with noting that a “few items” in development by first party studios, Kodera stated that the pipeline would be “improved and increased” in fiscal year 2018, essentially from April 2018 to April 2019. While it doesn’t mean that the number of first party IPs will be increasing, Kodera believes that “successful and powerful” IPs should be converted into franchises. This way, “the business associated with them can be expanded.”

There are many things that could be inferred from this improved first party pipeline, like groundwork being laid for the next generation. The increase in investment for research and development, even higher than the increase in fiscal year 2017, may further support any notions of a PlayStation 5 in the future. Kodera didn’t comment on the company’s next generation platform so all we’re left with is conjecture.
