Sony Pictures Entertainment have been trying to get a movie based on Hideo Kojima’s hit and profoundly expositional series, Metal Gear Solid, into theaters for quite a while now. Apparently, after a good while of no news, they’ve finally kicked the project into overdrive, as they seem to be recruiting talent to get the movie to happen. Deadline reports that the studio is in early talks to get Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct the film.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ filmography includes The Kings of Summer, which is a far cry from the nuclear facility infiltration and Cold War era espionage that is traditionally a hallmark of the Metal Gear Solid games, but of course, a good director can transcend genre and content to make a good movie no matter what.
Metal Gear Solid is of course only one of several planned movie adaptations of video games in the coming few years- some of the other high profile ones include movies based on Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, which are both Ubisoft properties. Traditionally, movies based on video games have been less than stellar, so the fact that so many beloved properties may be tampered with on screen is a little worrying to video game fans. Still, there is always the off chance that the adaptations may just work, so let’s stay hopeful.
