Sony is Aiming to Ship 25 Million Units of PS5 in FY 23/24

Sony says it intends to ship 25 million units of the PlayStation 5 between April 2023 and March 2024, more than any past PlayStation console has shipped in a single fiscal year.

Sony recently announced that as of March 31, the PS5 has shipped over 38.4 million units worldwide, of which 6.3 million were shipped in the January-March period, making it the most a console has ever shipped during a year’s Q1 period. Interestingly, it looks like the company is expecting the console’s sales graph to climb even higher over the coming year.

In its recent quarterly fiscal report, Sony said that it is aiming to ship 25 million units of the PS5 worldwide in FY 23/24 (April 2023-March 2024), which would be the highest shipment number for any PlayStation platform to date in a single fiscal year.

“We aim to continuously accelerate penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 sell-in units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units, the highest ever for any PS console in history,” the company wrote.

Reports have previously claimed that Sony is planning on launching new PS5 model with a detachable disc drive this September, so if that is accurate, that would presumably contribute to higher sales for the console in the coming months.

Meanwhile, one would assume new game releases for the PS5 this year will also drive sales, with major exclusives like Final Fantasy 16 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 set to release in the near future. Leaks have also claimed that Sony has PlayStation Showcase event scheduled for May, so we might learn about more 2023 titles there as well.
