Xbox Game Pass has been a revelation for the industry and the way people consume games since pretty much the day it launched, and with time and continuously improving support, the subscription service has only grown stronger and larger. That, of course, has led many to question whether others in the market – more specifically, PlayStation – are going to do something similar in response. It seems that that might indeed be the case.
In a video recently uploaded to YouTube (spotted by VGC), David Jaffe – creator of God of War and Twisted Metal – claimed that according to contacts he has at Sony, a response to Xbox Game Pass is being worked on and will be coming at some point in the future. What shape exactly that will take, Jaffe does not know.
“I’ve said time and again that people who are writing Jim Ryan’s obituary are way premature,” he said. “We had the guy on the show yesterday that had made the petition to fire Jim Ryan and I was like, ‘dude, that’s way premature’ because Jim Ryan doesn’t owe anybody, Sony doesn’t owe anybody, the truth about what’s coming and what their counterpunch to Game Pass is.”
“What I can tell you is I know they are doing some stuff because I know people at Sony who have told me that they are doing some stuff,” Jaffe continued. “There will be a response to Game Pass. What it is we don’t know.”
What Sony ends up coming up with as a “counterpunch” to Game Pass, or how accurate this report is, remains to be seen. It’s worth pointing out, however, that PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said back in November with regards to an Xbox Game Pass competitor that “there is actually news to come” on that at some point in the future.
